In today's hectic life style with free time becoming an evasive commodity and the To Do list growing longer, any way that the average person can save time, money and hassles is a welcome.  One task on everyone's list has always been to visit the bank for various financial services needs.  Whether it is to transfer money to a son's or daughter's college checking account or move money around to pay bills or to have money withdrawn by a spouse, making a trip to a brick and mortar banking branch is becoming outdated and unnecessary.

Enter online banking: Online banking is the process of accessing financial services through a remote personal computer.  Today, most banks offer the option of online banking through a company owned website.  Many banks offer this service free of charge and setting up the account can be quick and painless.  For example, Fifth Third Bank offers an online banking service to connect with any account you have at a Fifth Third branch.  All that is required is the account number and some other PIN information given by your home bank branch.

What is the advantage to online banking?  Access to your account in conventional banking is limited to the hours the branch is open.  Most banks are open on weekdays from at best
8 A.M to 6 P.M.  The average person has a difficult time driving to a bank during these hours because of work and other engagements after work.  Access to accounts in an online banking business model is available 24 hours a day seven days a week.  There is no need to leave work early and fight traffic to arrive at your local bank just as the shift is ending.

Other advantages exist in the online banking world.  Banks offer services of online automatic bill paying through a user's account.  With such a service, the bank allows the user to schedule payments for credit cards, mortgage, electric and water bills and even car payments.  In addition to paying these particular bills, email verification will be sent to the customer when the bill is paid.  This email can serve as a receipt in the future and is a great way organize bill payment records.  An online banking customer will also be made aware of new services and products offered by the bank.  If new interest rates are available on CDs or savings accounts, the customer will be made aware.  In addition, all the account manipulation that was previously handled by an afternoon trip to the bank will be available directly to the customer.

One aspect of online banking that concerns most potential users is the safety of the system.  While a risk always exists with any product or service available through the Internet, banks have gone to great lengths and are continuing to make the process of online banking safe and secure to customers.  Most people are willing to accept a small amount of financial risk for the convenience and control that online banking provides to them.
