Convenience Of Online Banking

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 757

Imagine this, you have to transfer funds to your boy who is in college, whose allowance is due or he doesn't get to eat.  Problem is, you're taking care of four more children and one of them can't even walk.  So what do you do?  Haul them all to the bank?  Ask the most senior of the kids to watch over his/her siblings?  What if she's not available?  Eventually, you decide to haul them all to the bank when to your horror, a line as long as the Great Wall of China daunts you with its presence?  Sound familiar?

With the dawn of the internet, more and more people are looking towards the web to help them with mundane tasks such as grocery shopping or buying gifts for loved ones.  Now they have taken it a step further by introducing online banking.

Online Banking is gift from heaven.  Where in the world can you go banking minus the queues, the anxiety and aggravation of going to the bank just to withdraw money, check your balance, transfer funds or pay for a bill?

Yes, those days are long gone.  Today, all you need is your computer and a reliable connection to the internet and voila!  You can do your banking right in the middle of your living room, in the comfort of your own home.  Yep, all these can now be done through your bank's website.

How do you access it?

It is a simple process actually, not a lot of fanfare nor a ton of requirements.

1.  First, you must know if your bank offers an online banking facility.  If they do then proceed to step two.

2.  Proceed to your local bank and ask for an application form for web access.  Present them with your ID and bank account number to prove that you indeed have an account with them.

3.  Fill out the information that is required on the application form.

4.  Sign then submit your application form.

Normally, it will take an hour or so for the application to be approved.  In some developing countries though, the application may take days.

Once you are approved, you are then given your Login Name together with your initial password or Pin Mailer.  Do not lose this piece of paper!  If you do and somebody unscrupulous picks it up then you are through.  Kiss your money goodbye.  What you should do is go home, log on to the account then change your password through the change password facility.  Now that you have changed the password, memorize it.  If you must write it down, take the piece of paper put it in a plastic bag, walk ten paces from the backdoor of your backyard, turn left at the tree and walk four more paces straight ahead...just kidding of course.  But it is with utmost importance that I stress this point that you must keep that piece of paper very safe.

Now that you are all set, you can bank while eating, smoking, drinking, taking care of the kids, doing the laundry and still you'll get the job done.  One last thing; the services that your bank offers online may differ from that of another bank.  Some banks allow you to open new accounts online, others don't.  Some allow you to apply for credit cards or loans (e.g. car loans or housing loans) online, while others may not offer the complete list of their services on their web pages.  Hence, it would be wise to first call your bank, inquire about what services they have on their web page then decide from their.
