Is Online Banking For You?

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 820

Online or Internet banking offers the banking customer many advantages that walk in customers don't usually enjoy at their bank. Aside from the obvious advantages of avoiding the customary wait or the need to conform to the hours offered by the banks, online banking can offer a more direct monitoring of various accounts. Investments can be bought or sold, bill payments made, and what's more, all this can be assembled within a money management software program.

One of the first things for an online banking customer to consider is what exactly it is that they plan on doing with their online banking account. This may seem obvious, but there all kinds of incentives being offered by banks to attract customers. If you have a clear picture of what you want in mind, then this will help you find your way to the account that best serves your needs.

Another factor to consider is compatibility. Most online banks offer Demos of their web sites. You can see how their web pages work, what you can do with them, and how you like them. In addition, many banks offer a test button to see if your computer has the appropriate software to be compatible with their security system. This is another important issue to consider.

While on the subject of security, many people would ask: How safe are Internet banking transactions? These days, with the security software and systems available, the answer is very safe. Obviously any computer transaction has a slightly greater risk of vulnerability to hacking than a face to face transaction, but these risks are very remote.

It is nearly impossible for a hacker to intercept encrypted messages sent back and forth between the bank and your computer. There are however, weaknesses in the system. If a hacker can steal or figure out your password, or even manage to lodge a Trojan on your computer to follow your keystrokes, then the security of your online transactions may be jeopardized.

Another ruse developed by hackers is Phishing. Phishing involves the use of an email that appears to come from your bank. The email tells you that your password and other information are needed by your bank as soon as possible, with some stringent deadline attached. The email has a link to a web site that looks like your bank's web site, but it is actually a fraudulent web site. The important thing to bear in mind is that your bank will never ask for your password.

One answer to this risk of password theft is the use of transaction numbers. Transaction numbers are essentially passwords that are used for only one transaction. Therefore, even if a hacker does manage to steal it,the number will be useless to the hacker.

For all the seemingly dire warnings, the chances of credit card, signature fraud, or any other form of fraud happening through an offline bank are actually more likely than online. Online banking fraud is in reality very rare.

The best approach for the individual interested in online banking is to learn as much as possible about what online bankers are offering you. This will include incentives, options in the area of online banking that interest you, as well as security precautions. The more you know about what is being offered, as well as what the real risks involved are, the better the choice you will ultimately make.
